Abstract

In the first decade of the Islamic Revolution, the dominant traditional religious discourse led to the widespread use of physical punishments and imprisonment, which were the primary form of punishment for most crimes before the revolution, were sidelined. while after a period, imprisonment was revived. The question is why, in a certain period of history, prisons were marginalized but in another, they became the primary form of punishment? This article aims to utilize sociology of culture to analyze the reasons for these events. Among the various approaches in sociology of culture, the classic approach – A subjective view of culture- and the post-structuralist approach – An objective view of culture - have been employed. Ultimately, it can be concluded that punishments in general and prisons in particular are social phenomena that are influenced by other socoal phenomena including culture. Therefore, prisons can be seen as reflective of cultural elements of the social system.
