Abstract
Ideology constitutes a systematic framework of beliefs that claims to explain the world, delineate friends from enemies, valorize or devalorize particular courses of action, and render behaviors either justified or unjustified. The functions of this concept are such that they render ideology susceptible to exploitation as a deceptive instrument in the hands of rulers for the violation of citizens' rights. In this manner, it becomes tenable to accept the proposition that the violation of citizens' rights by the government—conceptualized as state crime—may be regarded as an action engendered through the seductive power of ideology. This is because ideology possesses the capacity to clothe state crime in grandiose, eye-catching, and alluring attire, adorning and justifying it in the most favorable light. Accordingly, the present article, employing a descriptive-analytical methodology, seeks to examine the relationship between state crime and the seductive power of ideology, and to elucidate the design of state crime through the prism of the gradual ideological layering of such offenses. The findings of this article demonstrate that the seductive power of ideology facilitates the violation of citizens' rights by fostering specific conceptions of religion, nationality, ethnicity, and other ideological constructs, and subsequently, with consummate subtlety, renders the commission of state crimes possible through the processes of naturalization, othering, moralization, legalization, and the devalorization of human beings.
